Humidity Begins to Rise in June, Expansion Starts from the Scalp at the Top
Hello.
I am Megumi Ominato, a hairdresser specializing in scalp care in Kitakata City, Fukushima Prefecture.
With the arrival of June, rain forecasts have increased, and humidity is gradually beginning to rise.
Even though it's cool in the morning and evening, there are days when the heat and humidity are felt during the day.
These temperature changes and humidity variations actually have a significant impact not only on your hair but also on your scalp environment.
Recently, there have been more consultations such as “The hair was well-styled in the morning, but it expands when going outside”, “The top doesn't fluff up”, “The parting seems more prominent”, “The waves have become stronger”.
Many people tend to think of the effects of humidity as a hair issue, but in fact, the “condition of the scalp” is also often involved.
❖ Why is the top prone to expansion in June?
As humidity rises, hair becomes more susceptible to absorbing moisture from the air.
If the hair has well-regulated moisture balance, the impact is limited, but if the scalp environment is disrupted, the roots may weaken, and hair can appear heavier.
Additionally, rising humidity activates sebum secretion. As the temperature starts to rise in June, sweat glands also gradually become active, making the scalp prone to become greasy.
On the other hand, the inside of the scalp may be dry, causing a “oily surface but a moisture-deficient interior” imbalance to easily occur.
As this imbalance continues, the area around the pores becomes unstable, making it difficult for the hair to stand up from the roots.
❖ Why are people over 40 more affected?
After reaching the age of 40, the moisture retention and sebum secretion control functions of the scalp gradually change.
Even using the same shampoo or care as when you were younger, you may find it harder to manage your hair, feel less volume and become more sensitive to humidity, which may relate to changes in the scalp environment due to age.
Additionally, hormonal balance changes during and after menopause can also lead to scalp dryness and poor circulation.
If scalp circulation decreases, it becomes difficult to deliver sufficient nutrients and oxygen to the hair roots, leading to a decrease in firmness and resilience.
❖ Common Misunderstandings and the Pitfalls of Self-Care
When humidity causes hair to expand, many want to increase treatments or oils, but if heavy care products are used near the roots, it becomes harder to achieve volume.
Additionally, some people switch to strong cleansing shampoos because it's "greasy".
However, removing too much sebum can cause the scalp to compensate by becoming more active in sebum production.
As a result, you may experience a cycle of dryness in the morning and greasiness in the afternoon.
❖ “Pore Blockages and Hardness” Common in June Scalps
Upon examining the scalp at the salon, pore blockages and hardness around them are noticeable in June.
While it may look greasy, it lacks flexibility when touched.
In treatment, we focus on promoting circulation and balancing moisture and sebum based on the condition of the scalp.
Instead of stimulating strongly, we adjust to bring out the scalp's inherent functions, leading many to feel that “the top's lift has changed” and “it’s manageable even on humid days.”
❖ Recommended Approach for This Time of Year
June is also a preparation period before the rainy season fully starts.
Adjusting scalp circulation and hydration at this time can help reduce damage from summer UV rays and sweat.
By not ignoring a minor discomfort, but adjusting when it is small, it can be a shortcut to protect future hair volume and shine.
❖ Summary
During June when humidity rises, the spreading at the top and difficulty in managing may not just be hair issues but can be related to changes in the scalp environment.
For those over 40 who are concerned about volume depletion, waviness, prominent partings, or expansion due to humidity, it's advisable to first re-evaluate the condition of the scalp.
Before humidity takes over, why not start preparing from your scalp?
Knowing your current condition is the first step in protecting your hair in the future.
